| | President's Message - PTA Founder's Day This week I thought I would use this column to communicate and educate our families on the origins of what we know today as the Parent Teacher Association or PTA. February 17th, 1897 was the date that a meeting was held in Washington D.C. that resulted in the formation of the National Congress of Mothers, which later became the PTA. The Meeting was organized by Alice McLellan Birney, a native of Georgia, and Phoebe Apperson Hearst of San Francisco. They were concerned about the needs of children at the time of the Industrial Revolution and immense immigration into the United States. Children worked in factories, mines, and in the streets of cities, and some could not attend school or get enough to eat. Over 2000 people attended this first meeting.
In California two groups had formed: The California Home and School Child Study Association in San Francisco and the Los Angeles Federation of Mothers’ Clubs. In 1902, the California groups joined the national organization as the California Congress of Mothers and Study Circles, which later became the California Congress of Parents, Teachers, and Students, Inc. (The California State PTA). In 1970, the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, organized in 1926 by Selena Sloan Butler, united with the National Congress of Parents and Teachers to become the National PTA.
PTA’s throughout California and the nation have worked on behalf of our children through the years and continue their efforts today to make a difference in the lives of all children. Last year the National PTA had just under 6 million members with almost 1 million coming from California. This number helps our California PTA representatives successfully shape important legislation in Sacramento that will affect our children. I cannot stress enough the importance of parental involvement during these hard economic times – you are needed now more than ever. By joining the PTA, you have shown your support for your school and the efforts of those hardworking representatives. Thank you! If you haven’t joined, but are still interested, it’s never too late (forms are available in the office and our website).
Thank you so much for all you do for our kids!

Thank you everyone who showed both school and country pride by wearing red, white, and blue. back to top School Legislation & Budget Update
A recent budget update from PUSD Superintendent Don Phillips indicates the district has been successful this year in minimizing cuts to the classroom by dramatically trimming support systems, offering early teacher retirement, and by soliciting donations and increased parent volunteerism.
Going forward, the initial 2010-11 school year projections estimated $17million in funding reduction. However, while the Governor announced in January that he would protect public education funding, his proposal would result in a further reduction of over $2 billion in K-12 funding statewide. For PUSD, this means an additional $7 million in cuts making a total potential $24 million in funding reduction, or over 10% of PUSD’s $235 million budget.
Despite these cuts, Dr. Phillips reports the PUSD’s Academic Performance Index ranks among the top 3 school districts in the state with 20,000 or more students, along with Irvine Unified and San Ramon Unified.

| The Adobe Bluffs Winter Olympics – Thursday, February 25, 2010
The Adobe Bluff’s PTA is excited to announce that the AB Winter Olympics 2010 will be held on Thursday, February 25 from 8:30am to 10:45am. The PTA has organized and sponsored this day of field games for over 14 years. The AB Winter Olympics will focus on geography, teamwork, exercise and, of course, fun.
The field and multi-purpose room will be broken down into five sections. Four of the sections will be located on the field and will each represent a different country where a “real” Olympics was held. The last section, in the MPR, will be our Olympic Village, which will feature the history of the Olympics, background on some of the 2010 US Olympic team and a trivia game.
Please remind your student to wear comfortable clothes, sneakers and sunblock for this day of exercise and fun.
We are in need of over 60 volunteers, and donations of water jugs, oranges, and vanilla wafers, so if you are available to help at this exciting event please contact Nicole Sanseverino, 538-2200.
Let the games begin! back to top
