President's Message

In this week’s newsletter, as PTAs across the country celebrate Founders Day, I wanted to take a moment to look back at the history of PTA and remind our families of the substantial role that PTA has played locally, regionally, and nationally in supporting parent involvement and work on behalf of all children and families.  Founders Day is a time to reflect and take pride in our many accomplishments, and to renew our commitment to be:

·         a powerful voice for all children,

·         a relevant resource for parents,

·         and a strong advocate for public education.

On February 17, 1897 a meeting was held in Washington D.C. that resulted in the formation of the National Congress of Mothers, which later became today’s National PTA.  Founders Alice McLellan Birney, a native of Georgia, and Phoebe Apperson Hearst of San Francisco, were concerned about the needs of children at the time of the Industrial Revolution and immense immigration into the United States.  Children worked in factories, mines, and in the streets of cities, and some could not attend school or get enough to eat.  The following year over 2000 people attended the first annual general meeting of the National Congress of Mothers.

Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and the founder of Georgia's Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, Selena Sloan Butler, were women of imagination and courage. These women understood the power of individual action, worked beyond the accepted barriers of their day, and took action to literally change the world. They had a simple idea—to improve the lives and futures of all of our children.  As much as other conditions in America may have changed, that idea has not. PTAs keep it alive.

Today, PTA is the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the nation. Our members represent the ethnic diversity of our nation, and they come from the ranks of traditional families, single-parent households, blended families, grandparents, and other caring adults. Together, we continue to serve as the conscience of the country for children and youth.  Obviously, the original concerns of PTA’s Founders have long been remedied but we must not loose sight of the fact that our children will always need strong advocates to look out for their wellbeing and keep, front and center, issues which impact their ability to succeed.   Issues like adequate school funding, childhood obesity and Internet safety to name but a few.

Last year the National PTA had just under 6 million members with almost 1 million coming from California. This number helps our California PTA representatives successfully shape important legislation in Sacramento that will affect our children.  I cannot stress enough the importance of parental involvement – you are needed now more than ever.  By joining the PTA, you have shown your support for your school and the efforts of those hardworking representatives.  Thank you!  If you haven’t joined, but are still interested, it’s never too late (forms are available on our website).

Thank you for all you do for our kids!

Krissa Jensen, PTA President 2010-2011

Every Day Counts - Increasing student attendance increases learning & funding to schools

Did you know?

·            A student must work twice as hard the next day to catch up on missed information and homework. The U.S. Department of Education maintains that for every missed day of school, it takes a student two days to catch up.

·            A teacher loses class time by having to teach one student something that was taught the day before. This impacts other students as well, and valuable learning time is lost.

·            The average student in PUSD misses seven days of school a year.

·            If each student attends school for one more day this year, the District would receive one million dollars.

·            Parents can assist in the education of their children by getting students to school each day, unless a child is ill.

·            Since 1998 California schools are funded on actual student attendance each day, not on enrollment. The district does not receive funding for excused absences.

·            Poway Unified’s school calendar contains fall and winter and spring breaks. Please consider these vacation weeks for family vacations.

·            Even though Poway Unified has one of the highest attendance rates in the state, EVERY DAY COUNTS for learning and funding.

PUSD Integrated Preschool Opportunity

Poway Unified School District is pleased to offer for the 2011-2012 school year, Integrated Preschool Programs at Pomerado Elementary and Deer Canyon Elementary schools.  They will serve 3 to 5 year old children with and without special needs. A general education developmental curriculum will include both large and small group circle time, play, and language activities. Other skills and activities that are introduced are music and rhythm; self help skills, thinking skills, language arts, social skills, number concepts, gross and fine motor skills.  The children who have special needs may experience difficulty in one or more of the following areas:  speech and language, play skills, and social skills.  The success of the integrated program greatly depends on the inclusion of children without special needs who act as models as all children learn together.

All children in the preschool programs will work as an integrated group.  They will have opportunities to work and play together in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding.  The curriculum is play-based, which means that children are encouraged to play together in a way that leads to growth and development.

Our preschool staff will meet with you and arrange a class visitation and provide information about enrollment.

·      Class Time:  M-F, 5 hours per day  (Alternate times will be considered)

·      Options: 3 and 5 day options available.

·      Cost:  Five day program is $330 a month.  Prorated rates are available for other options.  There is also a one time, non-refundable $50 registration fee.

Currently, there are openings available and registration will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.  If interested, please contact Barbie Shrier at 858-521-2821
