Principal's Message

March is “Health and Fitness Month” at Adobe Bluffs.  On March 17th is our AB Educational Foundation Run2Play.  Students in each grade level will run for fun and help raise funds for our school.  The month comes to a close with “Walking School Bus” on March 31st. We will meet on the corner of La Trucha and Donaker at 7:15 am and walk to campus.  I look forward to seeing our students and families participate in these fun events.

Our Aztec Reading Program is in full swing and our students are really enjoying reading their favorite books. Over 2063 books have been read since the program started.  I have recently had a link added to our website's library page that allows students to look up the lexile level of books they are interested in reading.  Several parents have asked about lexile measures, so I’ve included this information to explain how they can help children grow as readers.

A Lexile measure is a valuable piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text, like a book or magazine article. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an "L" after it — 880L is 880 Lexile.  A student gets his or her Lexile reader measure from MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing each trimester.  The Lexile measure is a good starting point in the book-selection process.

If we know how well a student can read and how hard a specific book is to comprehend, we can predict how well that student will likely understand the book.  Lexile measures help a reader find books and articles at an appropriate level of difficulty and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. You also can use Lexile measures to monitor a reader's growth in reading ability over time.

When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. The reader will likely encounter some level of difficulty with the text, but not enough to get frustrated. This is the best way to grow as a reader—with text that's not too hard but not too easy.

When you receive a Lexile measure, try not to focus on the exact number. Instead, consider a reading range around the number. A person's Lexile range, or reading comprehension "sweet spot," is from 100L below to 50L above his or her reported Lexile measure. Use this Lexile range when searching for a book. And don't be afraid to look at books above and below someone's Lexile range. Just know that a reader might find these books particularly challenging or simple.

March is a very important academic month. There are no vacation days during the entire month.  Please do your best to make sure your child is at school on time and ready to learn.  Together we can help our students read more, participate in healthy activities, and enjoy learning each day.

With Aztec Pride,

Mark Aktins, Principal

Attention Parents and Grandparents! Morning Readers Needed!

We still need a few good men and women to read with children in our Morning Readers program.  At this time of year, participation seems to drop off, yet we have many students who make very impressive gains in reading if they get that extra 20 minutes of one-on-one reading in the mornings. Please consider donating a half hour to an hour a week to read, on your own schedule, in the class of your choice. If your child's teacher doesn't need any more readers, we will be happy to place you!

For information, or to begin, please contact Karen O'Connor in Room 16, by email.

The rewards are tremendous and your help is invaluable!

AB Run2Play Is On Its Way! Thursday, March 17, 2011

The Adobe Bluffs’ Run2Play, sponsored by the AB Foundation, will be held on Thursday, March 17th beginning at 7:50am.  The fun run is a fundraiser which will help support Physical Education at our school and also promotes physical fitness.  Every student will either walk or run during the event and all participants will receive a “Finishers Ribbon”.  Our goal is to show our students exercise can be fun!

The funds raised will help pay for a physical education teacher, purchase much needed P.E. equipment, help maintain the track and other items.  Fundraising materials were sent home in your student’s Friday Folder on March 4th.

If you have any questions please check the AB Foundation website or contact Foundation President, KC Hellenkamp.
