President's Message

Although it is still only April, your PTA is already hard at work planning for the 2010-2011 school year and we need your help.  Several leadership opportunities exist in some very beneficial PTA programs that will need to be filled.  If you are already volunteering some time for any PTA program (or any time at all in any capacity for our school), THANK YOU!  If you have ever thought of possibly taking on a Chairperson position, now is a great time.  Here are just a few of the opportunities that will be available:

·         AB Games Co-Chair

·         Art Show Chair

·         AB Giving Tree Chair

·         Spring Food Drive Chair

·         Dad’s Lunch Chair

·         Hospitality Chair

·         Mileage Club Co-Chair

·         Parent Education Chair

·         Red Ribbon Week Chair

·         Room J Coordinator (Committee)

·         Spirit Wear (T-Shirts) Chair

·         Traffic Circle Chair

I know taking on a leadership role in any form can be a little intimidating (it certainly was for me).  However, there are a lot of friendly, knowledgeable people who are ready to welcome you and help you succeed.  Adobe Bluffs Elementary PTA has a long and proud tradition of developing strong leaders and for that to continue, we need you.  If you are interested in exploring any of these opportunities please feel free to contact me, Ron Cole, Krissa Jensen, Executive VP or Marlene Perez, VP Programs.

Thanks for everything you do for our kids!

Ron Cole

AB Science Day – Friday, May 7, 2010

Science Day is coming up on May 7th.  Science Day is a school-wide event.  In the morning, your child's teacher may be planning extra special science activities.  Check with them to see if they need any help.  In the afternoon, Adobe Bluffs will have community members come and give 20 minute talks to all of the 2nd through 5th graders.  In addition, the amazing Mr. Burton and the HazMat team will be doing a 40 minute presentation in the MPR.  The first graders and kindergarteners will go to a special presentation by Radical Reptiles.  Volunteers are needed to help greet our community presenters and set up lunch for them and the staff (approximate time is from 11am-12:45pm).  If you are interested and available please contact Stephanie Gragg, (858)484-5257.

AB PTA Book Exchange & Sale - May 12-14, 2010

This is a fun way to encourage reading!

The Adobe Bluffs PTA is having a Book Exchange! Take some time to clean out your bookshelves.

You can exchange your books for “new” books.  It’s easy!

Bring in gently used books (grade level K–5) before or after school during collection days, May 3-7, drop off will be outside the MPR.  All books should be in resalable condition!   You will get credit for each book brought in.

Exchange days are May 12 – May 14.  Wednesday, May 12, is a credit only day.  Only students that brought in books can exchange, with a limit of 10 books on this day.  On May 13 and May 14, the exchange will open to all students.  Use your credits or purchase books for $0.25.

All proceeds will go towards new books for the library.  Any unused books will be donated.

If you have any questions, please contact Jaime Kaesbauer, (858)538-5897.

Spring Scholastic Book Fair – May 17-21, 2010

It’s time to celebrate books and reading with our PTA sponsored Spring Scholastic Book Fair. This spring we will be having a BOGO (Buy One Get One Free) Book fair!!!   We hope you will come and take this opportunity to support literacy and get some great books for summer reading!

Children will visit the fair with their class. They may bring money to purchase books or fill out a wish list to bring home. Teachers will also have wish lists at the fair so that parents who are interested in giving a teacher a book will be able to look at a list and avoid duplication. Another option is a book gift certificate that allows the teacher to pick out their own book for the class.

Back by popular demand will be the poster drawing at the end of the book fair week.  Parent letters, book fair flyers and the ticket for the poster drawing will be coming home in early May!

Calling All Morning Readers...

It's never too late to become a Morning Reader!  As is common during this time of year, we have seen the number of Morning Readers diminish as lives get busier and the school year starts to wind down. But we still have many children who strongly benefit from just 15 minutes of one-on-one reading whenever there is an adult available! Make your morning count by stopping in and reading with one of our children! If you are new to this, one-on-one training will be cheerfully given.

Thank you!

Karen O'Connor

Morning Readers Coordinator
