Principal's Message

The school year is winding down, but things are still pretty busy around campus.  There are some important events happening in May.  Kindergarten and new student registration began last week. If you know new families in the neighborhood, invite them to visit the district website for information and come in to register their student as soon as possible.  Current ABES students who plan to continue with us next year will have registration starting on the 23rd.

Science Day on Friday was a huge success!  We had many wonderful presenters from our community.  Ask your student what they enjoyed most about it.  The Spring Book fair will begin next week from the 16th – 20th.  It is a buy one get one free event.  Our 5th grade band students have really worked hard all year and are ready to show what they have learned.  The Spring Concert will be on May 19th at 6:30 pm, you don’t want to miss it.

I want to remind everyone of the importance of being on time for school, and working hard until the final bell on the last day.  On May 26th, we will have our final Thursday sing and at that time we will have the drawing for two new bicycles for students with “no tardies.”  The next day is our AB College Games on the 27th.  This is a fun day that students look forward to all year.  With all of the great events we have planned, May is a fun month at Adobe Bluffs.

With Aztec Pride,

Mark Atkins

Got Leadership? Adobe Bluffs Students need you!

Although we still have a month of school left this year, your PTA is already hard at work planning for the 2011-2012 school year and we need your help.  Several leadership opportunities exist in some very beneficial PTA programs that will need to be filled.  If you are already volunteering some time for any PTA program (or any time at all in any capacity for our school), THANK YOU!  If you have ever thought of possibly taking on a Chairperson position, now is a great time.  Here are just a few of the opportunities that will be available:

AB Games Chair

Art Show Chair

Author’s Faire

Back to School Breakfast for Teachers

Celebrate Diversity Night

Character Counts

Dad’s Breakfast Chair

Dad’s Club

Website Chair (webmaster)

Red Ribbon Week

Reflections

Parent Education Chair

Summer Book Club

I know taking on a leadership role in any form can be a little intimidating (it certainly was for me).  However, there are a lot of friendly, knowledgeable people who are ready to welcome you and help you succeed.  Adobe Bluffs Elementary PTA has a long and proud tradition of developing strong leaders and for that to continue, we need you.  If you are interested in exploring any of these opportunities please feel free to contact me, Krissa Jensen, or Cari Piglowski, (caripiglowski@gmail.com )VP Programs.

Thanks for everything you do for our kids!

Krissa Jensen, PTA President 2010-2011

AB Summer Book Club – Don’t send your student down the “summer slide”

“In a 2009 government web cast, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan described summer learning loss as ‘devastating’. This is what researchers have often referred to as the ‘summer slide’.  It is estimated that school summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction, with disadvantaged students being disproportionately affected (Cooper, 1996).” (Source: New York City Library)

  • For students in grades 1-5  (2011-2012 school year)

  • All grades meet on the same days from 4-5:30pm
    • Tuesday, June 28
    • Wednesday, July 13
    • Monday, August 8

The AB PTA is here to help by providing books, a place to meet, book related activities and a snack. What we need are volunteers to lead book discussions and help with crafts and games. Contact Corrine Cousar if you are interested in helping.  More information and a registration form will come home in your child’s red folder.

Thank You, Art Show Volunteers

Thank You to all the wonderful parent volunteers who helped make this year’s Art Show possible.  Thank you for the art docents in the classes, the volunteers who cut, glued and matted the work and all the volunteers who hung the Art transforming the MPR into AB's very own Art Gallery of Budding Artists.  In case you missed the Art Show, stop by the MPR to see the artwork.  We will keep it up as long as possible until the end of the school year.

I don’t know where my jacket is! – Have you looked in the Lost and Found in the MPR?

Winter may be over but we still have jackets at school.  There are more than 100 pieces of clothing, mostly jackets and sweatshirts in the school’s lost-and-found located in the MPR.  All unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the school year.
