President's Message

As I embark upon our family’s fifth year at Adobe Bluffs I can’t help but recall our first days as Kindergarten parents.  Besides the excitement, and tiny bit of fear, I especially recall being awed by the number of volunteers who put in countless hours at Adobe Bluffs.  Parents helping teachers in their classrooms, counting laps for the kids during Mileage Club, bringing interesting and creative art projects into the classrooms, organizing family events, room parents throwing class parties and volunteers sitting patiently with the child who needs just a little more reading practice.  I recall wondering back then, ‘Who are all these people who give so much of their time and why do they do it?’

Year after year I found myself becoming more and more involved, both encouraged and inspired by others to do just a little more.  Eventually I discovered for myself why so many of us put in so much of our time.  It just feels good!  It feels good to help lighten a teacher’s load just a little; it feels good to see the smile on a child’s face when they’ve earned one more token at Mileage Club; it feels good to have a child tell you “Sorry Mrs. Jensen, I won’t be reading with you anymore because I’m reading so well now my teacher took me out of Morning Readers.”

As I begin my first term as your PTA President I am more awed than ever by the efforts of our Adobe Bluffs volunteers who have already logged hundreds of hours preparing for the 2010-11 school year.  I would like to take a moment to thank our Past President, Ron Cole, for leaving us with such a terrific and well oiled team of veteran volunteers and for his help in making my transition as seamless as possible.  I would like to thank our Principal, Mr. Atkins, and our incredible team of Adobe Bluffs teachers and staff for their unfailing professionalism and dedication in these times of extreme budgetary setbacks.

Finally, I wish to welcome our new families into the Adobe Bluffs Elementary School community. Together we will make this the best year ever for our children!  Go Aztecs!

Sincerely,

Krissa Jensen, PTA President 2010-2011

Principal's Message

Hello Adobe Bluffs families, and welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I am looking forward to an exciting year as principal of our outstanding school.  Our faculty and staff are committed to making this a great year, regardless of budgetary issues.  We acknowledge and appreciate the “can do” spirit in our students and community, and know that by working together we can accomplish great things.

I want to remind everyone of the importance of arriving to school on time.  Punctuality is important, and we will again encourage students with our attendance incentive program.  At the end of the year, students who have not been tardy will have their name in a drawing for two brand new bicycles.  We want sick children to stay home until they are well. That is one reason we focus on punctuality and not attendance.

We will have the same bell schedule and will begin class at 7:45 am. We will have adult supervision on campus beginning at 7:25 each morning. Children are not allowed on campus before 7:25am.  If you need morning childcare, please sign your child up for the ESS program, which now has programs for parents who only need morning childcare. Their number is (858) 538-2672.

Please remember to use the traffic circle when picking up and dropping off students. This is the best way to have smooth traffic flow.  We need drivers to pull all the way forward, and to stay in their vehicles. In the mornings we will continue to have parent helpers to assist students with exiting the vehicle.

I encourage all parents to get involved with PTA and/or AB Foundation. Our parents support has been tremendous and has allowed us to have programs and opportunities for students in spite of our poor budget.  Volunteering in the classroom or on campus helps more than you can imagine.  Even if you only have an hour or two, please sign up.  We appreciate your help.

We plan to do many great things this year! I know we will be successful.  We have awesome students, dedicated staff members and great volunteers.  I hope to see you at the back to school picnic.

Adobe Bluffs Dads' Club

Welcome back to the returning Adobe Bluffs families and welcome to the new families joining us.  This year we are attempting to start something new at Adobe Bluffs, The Dads’ Club.  This is a spinoff from the Dad’s Luncheon with the goal of providing Dads* more opportunities to get involved, while also helping out OUR school.

The projects may range in size from helping around the school with flower beds to building a few more backpack hooks in front of some of the classrooms.  There is a special project we’d like to help with, but it will need some special skills and a lot of labor as we may consider placing a border around “Anthony’s Arbor” if we can find Dads with the skills needed.

What we are asking of Dads is to volunteer some time to help with these projects.  All Dads are needed and will be appreciated.  We would really like to have any Dads with construction skills to help plan and lead us through some of the projects.  We would also welcome your ideas for low cost Dad led events and/or projects.

There will be a sign-up table at the NFL Back-to-School Picnic on September 10, 2010.  If you are unable to make the picnic, please contact Brent Naritomi or Kevin Wong to let us know you would like to help.  Thank you for helping OUR kids and go AZTECS!

*Adobe Bluffs dads, grandfathers, uncles, other male or female role models are welcome.

Adobe Bluffs Educational Foundation

Hello, my name is KC Hellenkamp and I am the Adobe Bluffs Educational Foundation President for the 2010-2011 school year.  On behalf of the Foundation, I would like to welcome you back for what is sure to be an amazing school year!   The Foundation was created in 2002 to provide funding for large capital acquisitions and projects.

The Foundation is powerless without your donations.  Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.  Please note that all of your money is tax deductible and is put back into the school.  Please look for our donation forms in your child’s red folder.  This year, the Foundation would like to add new programs such as a basket drive and “teachers deliver your pizza” night.  To make that happen, we will need your support.  If you are interested in volunteering or being involved with the Foundation on an ongoing basis, please contact me or visit the ABEF website, at which you can also access the 2010–2011 schedule of Foundation meetings.

Whether it be with the Foundation, the PTA, or in the classroom, volunteering makes a huge difference.  We need to work together because the school relies on our help. Here's to a great school year!!

Thanks,

KC Hellenkamp, Adobe Bluffs Educational Foundation President

AB Volunteer Opportunities

As the 2010-11 school year begins I wanted to make you aware that many of the great programs our school offers throughout the year need parent Volunteers.  Please look for the Volunteer Form in your child’s First Day Packet. On the form I have included descriptions of the programs & the time of year when the program will take place.  You will see that some of these events are just one time a year & some will take place throughout the whole year so you can choose volunteer experiences that will fit easily into your schedule.

Your kids will love to see you volunteering at school & the entire Adobe Bluffs community will benefit immensely from the time you invest in our children’s educational experience!

If you have any questions about the Volunteer opportunities please email me & I will be happy to assist you.

Michele Kelly, VP Volunteers

“Hassle-Free” Fundraising 2010-2011

Adobe Bluffs PTA’s primary source of fundraising is “hassle-free”.  100% of your donation goes to Adobe Bluffs and is a one-time tax deductible donation.  The donation ensures the continuation of educational and fun community-based programs that give your child a great sense of achievement.

Your money goes towards programs such as:

  • Arts Attack – art programs taught in the classroom

  • Mileage Club – a healthy choice for lunch recess

  • Winter Jamboree – a carnival with food, games & prizes

  • AB Games – a school wide sports day

  • Science Day – a event exploring science with students

  • Author’s Faire – an assembly with a published author

  • Performing Arts – students experience a live performance

  • Diversity Day – a mix of culture and community

  • Literacy Support – in-class reading program support

  • Safety Patrol – provides crossing guards

These programs need your support in order to continue.  We’re asking families to contribute $60 per student; however, if $60 is too much, then consider a smaller donation to show your support.  And if you are able to contribute $200, you will join our AB Family Circle. You will be invited to a Fiesta lunch with the Principal and be acknowledged in the PTA Newsletter.

Remember, many companies will match your contributions dollar for dollar so please ask your employer and tap into an additional source of funding for the school.

Look for the “Hassle-Free” section on the Adobe Bluffs PTA Order Form which came home in your child’s First Day Packet. Thank you for your continued support of Adobe Bluffs PTA and its programs! If you have any questions, please contact me.

Box Tops for Adobe Bluffs

Hopefully, you've all been able to save those BOX TOPS during the summer, because we're going to have some great contests this year for those classes and kids that bring in the most boxtops.  More information to come on the contests shortly!

Those 10 Cent box tops really add up!!  Last year, we were able to bring in over $1000 to Adobe Bluffs through the box top program and I think we can do even better this year!  If every child brought in only 50 box tops, that would be $2000 for Adobe Bluffs!!

Also, there have been a lot of BONUS BOX TOP promotions lately with grocery stores and other retailers; where you can get 50-70 bonus boxtops through purchasing 5-10 participating products.  This is a great way to get lots of box tops at one time!!  To find out more about the promotions going on now, click here.

Thank You for Supporting 5th Grade Fundraising Efforts - gift from the 5th grade class of 2009-2010

Thank you to all the wonderful Aztecs, family and friends who contributed to the 2009-2010 5th Grade fundraising events.  These included umbrella and stand sales, decorative reusable bags and the popular Friday popcorn and lemonade sales.  With funds raised the 5th grade was able to enjoy a Hawaiian themed picnic at

the end of the school year, purchase their reduced cost AB Signature Shirts and celebrate their promotion to middle school with cake, family and friends.

Due to the success of these fundraising events the 5th Grade were able to purchase a Snow Cone machine for the school to be used at various events and supplied classrooms with an assortment of playground items such as balls and skipping ropes for the start of the 2010-2011 school year.

Let’s continue to support our new 5th Grade Aztecs by contributing to their fundraising efforts so that they too can have a memorable end to their last year of elementary school.  Watch for their signs around the school.
