| | Principal's Message Our school year is off to a fantastic start, and I want to thank everyone for helping to make that happen. Thank you for having your students come to school on time and prepared to learn each day. In almost every letter, I talk about how wonderful our staff, and students are. Our staff emphasizes the character traits, and our students show good character daily. Our kids work hard in the classroom, and enjoy learning. This month the state released the STAR test results and we had a 14 point increase. Adobe Bluffs has an API score of 946! That is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students. Great job everyone!
I enjoyed seeing all of the families at Back to School Night. This year we have a few more challenges, but we are all rising to meet them. I want to extend a special thanks to the PTA for their help organizing our NFL Back to School Picnic. This is our third year having a back to school picnic. We selected that theme in order to apply for the $10,000 grant from the NFL. The night was planned by a group of dedicated parents lead by Corrine Cousar. I also wanted to thank Deanna Asakawa for writing the grant and everyone who turned in photos of the event and all the others who helped make it happen. The kids and families looked like they had a great time. The winner of the grant will be notified on October 4th. This year we will encourage literacy by having an Aztec Reading Program. We will create a goal for the school, and then keep track of how many books our students read over a designated time. We will need your help to monitor their reading. I’ll have to think of what I’ll do when they reach the goal. However, it won’t involve kissing any pigs. Send me your ideas.
With Aztec Pride Mark Atkins back to top Congratulations Adobe Bluffs, and Special Thanks to Rubio's!
The community of Adobe Bluffs was able to come together within just three days of the start of school to spend over one thousand dollars at Rubio's. This resulted in $234.00 of fundraising money raised. If we continue with at least this amount for the next ten Rubio's fundraisers, we will raise over $2000.00! This amount of money would pay for two years of Computer Resource Assistant help for M.A.P.S. testing. The next Rubio's Day is this Saturday, September 25. Help us beat our target! Bring in an AB Rubio's flyer. Buy food. Have 25% of your meal money donated to AB. While you're at it, bring a friend! Tell your co-workers! Bring flyers to your child's sports team! Eat up at Rubio's Saturday, September 25, anytime between 11am & 9pm, closing. back to top Parents of English Language Learners Meeting - Thursday, September 30, 2010 The first meeting for parents of English Language Learners will be on Thursday, September 30th. Red Ribbon & Character Counts! Celebration - October 18-22, 2010 "The Choice for Me is Drug Free"
Red Ribbon Week was created 25 years ago after DEA agent Kiki Camarena was murdered in Mexico City by drug traffickers. The Red Ribbon campaign is a symbol of intolerance towards drug use. The mission is to show a unified and visible commitment towards a DRUG-FREE AMERICA!
FOR PARENTS: WE need to you to pledge to talk to YOUR children about the dangers of drug abuse; set clear rules about NOT using drugs and set a GOOD example by not using illegal drugs or medication without a prescription. Prescription drug abuse is the largest growing drug abuse problem with our children right now.
Learn more and be AWARE of the symptoms on the DEA website. Remember you need to protect your children and talk to them EARLY about not using drugs. Learn more about Character Counts! on PUSD's Character Counts! page .
FOR STUDENTS: Come to school and show your support for a DRUG-FREE AMERICA!! You will receive Red Ribbon’s to display on your backpack. Monday: Visit the Pledge table at lunch and sign your pledge against drugs. All pledges will be entered into a raffle, one winner per grade level will receive a free frozen yogurt! All pledges will be displayed. Tuesday: wear RED all day long! The winners of the raffle will be announced! Wednesday: Come run a few laps at Mileage Club for a special Red Ribbon token and visit with a Police Officer! Friday: Every grade level will wear a color of the six Pillars of Character for a school wide photo. PreK, PEPP & K: Purple 1st Grade: Yellow 2nd Grade: Orange 3rd Grade: Green 4th Grade: Blue 5th Grade: Red
We will need parent volunteers at lunch on Monday to help with the pledges and on Wednesday to help with Mileage Club.

PTA Reflections 2010-2011 "Together we can..." - Friday, October 29, 2010 deadline
The ABES PTA invites Adobe Bluff Aztecs to tap into their natural creativity by participating in Reflections. Reflections is a wonderful arts recognition program sponsored by the National PTA and California PTA. Students can choose to create an original piece of art, music, photography, writing, video, or choreography to express their interpretation of the theme, “Together we can“. The goal of Reflections is participation, not winning. Every child who enters will receive a certificate and ribbon and be invited to a Reflections Art Reception in November. So parents, please encourage your children to channel their creativity, for their own satisfaction, and for others to enjoy. Official entry forms and rules sheets for the categories your student participates in will be sent home and will also be available in the office beginning in September 24th. Reflections links are also available on the ABES PTA Reflections page. All of the student works must be submitted by October 29th. It is essential that each piece have a completed Official Entry Form and Consent form, signed by student and a parent/guardian, and an Artistic statement. The Reflections program is sponsored by the national PTA, and the top entries from ABES will be sent to the 9th District level to represent our school. Potentially, an Adobe Bluffs entry could reach the state or national level!

Thank You for Your PTA Hassle Free Donations A big, big thank you goes out to all the AB families who have donated to this year’s PTA Hassle Free. We currently have 131 families that have donated $9,858 to Hassle Free. That is 82% of our goal of $12,000 contributed from less than 50% of our AB families! Your support is greatly appreciated. Recognition is extended to the following AB Family Circle Members for their generous donations of over $200 each to the school PTA: Anonymous Donor - Babakhani/Ghazi Family
- Dibsie Family
- Erwin/Zhang Family
- Forster Family
- Hall Family
- Jung Family
- Martinez Family
- McLaughlin/Jensen Family
- Pereira Family
- Rice Family
These families will be invited to a Fiesta Luncheon during school with the Principal. Invitations will be sent out shortly. As a recap, Hassle Free is the PTA’s only fund raising program that supports all the PTA programs and services within the school and community. Programs like the Back to School Picnic that took place on Friday or Mileage Club which started this week or the school wide art and reading programs which will begin soon. With these donations, big or small, the PTA is able to ensure that these programs continue and help fill the void left by budget cuts in the fields of arts and literature, science, health and fitness. If you have not yet had a chance to donate then please go to the Adobe Bluffs PTA website and print out a form. Mark off your donation on the Hassle Free section, include your details with check and return to your child’s teacher. Remember, if everybody is able to give, even a little, then we can reach our goal and ensure that these programs do not have to end. Please contact Corrinne Cousar if you have any questions. Thank you again for all the support and donations. back to top

It is not too late to join PTA. Fill out a membership form and drop it off in the office or turn it in to your child's teacher. back to top
NFL Back-toSchool Picnic Adobe Bluffs had its annual back-to-school picnic on Friday night with an NFL/Chargers theme. All week long Adobe Bluffs showed its Chargers spirit and its commitment to health and wellness. PE Instructor, Nicole Sanseverino taught football skills and discussed health and wellness during SPARK with the students. At lunch on Friday she displayed and discussed healthy versus unhealthy lunches. Guess which one your child picked? Newly appointed room parents decorated doors and windows to show how much spirit the school had. We had a lot! Check out the yearbook at the end of the year and see for yourself. The school also had a pennant bookmark competition. Read the article below about the winning bookmarks. To finish off the weeklong celebration there was a football themed picnic on Friday night with a table full of tailgate desserts to share. It was a huge success with more than 75 families in attendance. Around 300 people. Mr. Atkins and many of the teachers turned out to show their support and cheer on their favorite team. Past AB alumni did an awesome job of helping with crafts and games. What was the reason for all the Charger spirit? Adobe Bluffs has applied for an “NFL PLAY 60 Grant” for a chance to win $10,000 or a visit from an NFL Player. The Grant team’s submission included detailed information of how AB showed its Chargers spirit and its commitment to health and wellness along with the best picture of our efforts. The winning entries will be revealed in October. Winning would be great and would give us a much needed boast to the schools budget for health and fitness but just getting together to start off the year was fun too. Thank you very much to everyone involved. This has been an amazing display of school spirit and commitment to the students and the school. Go Aztecs! Corrinne Cousar PTA Back to School Chairperson
