President's Message

October 8, 2010

CHARACTER COUNTS!

Everywhere …all the time at Adobe Bluffs!

Officially National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week kicks off October 17th.   CHARACTER COUNTS! Week is the biggest celebration of character worldwide.  Last year millions of kids in 54 countries celebrated the Six Pillars of Character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

CHARACTER COUNTS! is a national character education program administered by the Josephson Institute and Center for Youth Ethics and is actively supported by the Poway Unified School District and Adobe Bluffs/Polamar Council PTAs.

Beginning October 18th Adobe Bluffs will be running its annual concurrent Red Ribbon and CHARACTER COUNTS! Celebration as both these messages go hand-in-hand.   Our kids will pledge to stay drug free while being reminded of the Six Pillars of Character.  On Friday, October 22nd students will be asked to wear a Character Pillar color corresponding to their grade level and a school wide photo of the six color coded “Character Pillars” will be taken.

The Six Pillars and their corresponding colors and meanings are:

Citizenship: Purple (PreK, PEPP, K)

Think regal purple as representing the state

Responsibility: green (3rd grade)

Think being responsible for a garden or finances’ or as in being solid and reliable like an oak

Respect: yellow/gold (1st grade)

Think The Golden Rule

Trustworthiness: blue (4th grade)

Think “true blue”

Fairness: orange (2nd grade)

Think of dividing an orange into equal sections to share fairly with friends

Caring: red (5th grade)

Think of a heart

The Six Pillars are the foundation for showing good character from learning in a classroom, eating lunch, and interacting with others. The Six Pillars of character have become part of the language among Adobe Bluffs students and staff, and students are encouraged and recognized for showing good character throughout the school year!

Below are a few helpful tips for parents to help children learn to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens from Parents, Kids and Character: 21 Strategies to Help Your Children Develop Character, by Dr. Helen R. LeGette:

  • Be clear about your values. Tell your children where you stand on important issues. Good character is taught and caught. If we want children to internalize the virtues that we value, we need to teach them what we believe and why. In the daily living of our lives, there are countless opportunities to engage children in moral conversation.

  •  Refuse to cover for your children or make excuses for their inappropriate behavior. Shielding children and youth from the logical consequences of their actions fails to teach them personal responsibility. It also undermines social customs and laws by giving them the impression that they are somehow exempt from the regulations that govern others' behavior.

  • Show respect for your spouse, your children, and other family members. Parents who honor each other, who share responsibilities, and resolve differences in peaceful ways communicate a powerful message of respect. Respect begets respect...and children notice.

Red Ribbon & Character Counts! Celebration

October 18-22, 2010

"The Choice for Me is Drug Free"

Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug prevention program in the United States.  Schools all across America will wear RED and display their RED Ribbons as a symbol that they have pledged to “Just say NO” and stay drug free.

PARENTS:  Please take a moment to speak with your children about the dangers of drug abuse and give them options instead; such as sports, volunteering in the community and a whole host of other healthy choices.

STUDENTS: It is almost here!!  This is your chance to make the choice to stay DRUG-FREE!  Make a pact with your friends to say NO to drugs!  Choose to participate in fun, healthy activities instead.  Talk to your parents and learn the consequences of using drugs and ask questions if you have them.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Monday: Visit the Pledge table at lunch and sign your pledge against drugs.  All pledges will be entered into a raffle; one winner per grade level will receive a free frozen yogurt!  All pledges will be displayed.

Tuesday: Wear RED all day long!  The winners of the raffle will be announced!

Wednesday: Come run a few laps at Mileage Club for a special Red Ribbon token and visit with a Police Officer!

Wednesday, October 20 - Students will be treated to an assembly called “Hip Pocket” by Lamb’s Players Theatre.  HIP POCKET celebrates diversity and respect, while exploring the challenges and triumphs of friendships, peer pressure, pursuing dreams through education, and the surprising weakness of those who bully, tease, and gossip.

Friday:  Every grade level will wear a color of the six Pillars of Character and Character certificates will be passed out to students.

PreK, PEPP & K: Purple     3rd Grade: Green

1st Grade: Yellow                4th Grade: Blue

2nd Grade: Orange             5th Grade: Red

Have a marvelous and FUN week and remember….”JUST SAY NO!”

Foundation Rubio’s Fundraiser

The Adobe Bluffs Foundation would like to say thank you to Rubio's Torrey Highlands, and to all the parents who made a special effort to participate in our Saturday Fundraiser in September.  Thanks to your efforts, we beat last month's record!  In August, we sold $1000.00 worth of food, to make $234.00 for the school.  In September, we sold $1500.00 worth of food, to make $304.04 for Adobe Bluffs!  Well done!  Our goal is $2000.00 which is the amount we pay for two years of a computer resource teacher during MAPS testing.  We appreciate all the parents who made a special effort to bring their teams/friends on the day of the event.

Please join us for our special October 30th Halloween at Rubio's Saturday Fundraiser!  If you have a team or a group that meets on Saturday, please consider bringing them along.

As always, the flier can be found at:  http://adobebluffsfoundation.org/RubiosFlyer.aspx

It will also be placed in your child's red folder the week of October 30th.

DAD’S BREAKFAST WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!!

"Thanks AB!" from the Dad's Club

Despite a morning that started off with light rain and dark clouds, the Adobe Bluffs Dads’ Club first ever fund raiser of OJ and Muffins was an astounding success.

We would like to THANK all the AB families who showed up with a smile to enjoy a morning snack with the students. To our chagrin, we severely underestimated the number of families and quickly ran short of muffins and OJ! If not for the quick response of Karin Wong and Kristine Bednarz who brought further supplies, we would have had to close our fundraiser prematurely. Thank you Principal Atkins, Teachers and Staff for supporting this endeavor as we may have delayed the start of classes by a few minutes.  We learned a lot and will be better prepared for our next Dad’s Breakfast!

The money raised will help Dads’ Club purchase supplies to repaint and perform maintenance on the playground, backstops and field in the next few weeks. If you are interested in joining AB’s Dads’ Club or helping out with these projects, please contact us.

We look forward to scheduling another OJ and Muffins Dad’s Breakfast.  Go Aztecs!
