Principal's Message - Character Counts

Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring & Citizenship

October 18-22nd was Character Counts Week.  Teaching our students how to be good citizens is closely tied to teaching them to be good students.  Each month your children’s teachers focus on one of the six Pillars of Character (Responsibility, Respect, Citizenship, Caring, Fairness and Trustworthiness), helping students understand the meaning of these terms and how to behave in ways that demonstrate these traits.  We use these terms as we teach students study skills, how to conduct themselves on the playground, and appropriate ways to communicate with others.

Throughout the day and year, staff members encourage students to think about character and give their best effort.   Outside of the classroom, students “caught” showing character may be given Character Cards and have their name announced during the Monday morning announcements.  When our students misbehave, the best thing we can do is hold them accountable for their behavior, and make sure they know and can tell us the proper way to behave.  When students make poor choices, we refer back to the character trait that they need to work on.  Children need to understand that is wasn’t a poor choice because they got in trouble, but because it showed that they were not acting with appropriate character.  Parents may want to reinforce this focus on identifying behaviors by their character trait.  Character Counts also offers free resources for parents, click here

Mark Atkins

Are you ready for some ART? Can you tell what “Together we can..”  is in some artistic way?

PTA Reflections is looking for those artists that can show or tell us what “Together we can”  is in any of the following categories: literature, visual arts, photography, music composition, film/video and/or dance choreography. Express yourself in written word, visual arts, photographs, film, in a song or with movement (dance). Entries are now being accepted in the ABES office….don’t mean to rush your artistic process but the deadline is fast approaching!! Friday, October 29th is the deadline for all Reflections entries.  All entrants will be recognized at a Reflections Art Reception in the MPR in November and will receive a certificate and ribbon for their hard work!

Official rules and entry forms can be downloaded at the Calfornia PTA and National PTA websites. A limited supply of additional rules and entry forms are also in the office.  Remember all entries must include signatures from the student and parent, a signed consent form and a brief artistic statement about the artwork.

Scholastic Book Fair - November 1-5, 2010

It’s time to celebrate books and reading with our PTA sponsored Fall Scholastic Book Fair. This year’s theme is: Here’s To Our Heroes!! Reading Saves The Day! The awesome Book Fair is scheduled for November 1-5.

Children will visit the fair with their class during school. They may bring money to purchase books or fill out a wish list to bring home. There will also be a teacher wish list board at the fair so that parents who are interested in giving a book to the class can do so without duplication.

We hope you will come and take this opportunity to support literacy!

Remember Adobe Bluffs earns up to 60% of sales from the fair to purchase books for our school library. So, please come and support your children and our school!

Back by popular demand will be the poster drawing on the last day of the book fair. More information will be coming home in red folders prior to the fair.

Mileage Club - Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Mileage club has begun and the kids are off and running! It is a great program that encourages the kids to exercise by running the track at recess and get rewarded for it at the same time. It is also a fun and easy volunteer opportunity, and we are still in need of volunteers. Mileage Club is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during both lunch recesses (from 11:25 – 12:30). If you would like to volunteer or have any questions, please email Kristine Brownlee

Thank you for Your Donations from ABEF

On behalf of the Adobe Bluffs Educational Foundation, I would like to thank all of the families who donated toward our initial drive this year.  As of October, we have had a total contribution of $12,325.  We are so lucky to have your support now and throughout the school year.  Already this year the Foundation has funded the P.E. teacher, the impact teacher, the computer resource assistant, and the new rolling backpack racks for the interior classrooms.  None of these things would be possible without our wonderful Adobe Bluffs families.  If you have not done so already please remember to donate.  Every little bit helps and really adds up.

Sincerely,

K.C. Hellenkamp

President

Red Ribbon and Character Counts! Week - “The Choice for Me is Drug Free!”

This year’s Red Ribbon and Character Counts! week was a great success!  All students were given Red Ribbons and asked to display them on their backpacks for the duration of the week, which I think, was very successful since I saw tons of Red Ribbons on backpacks all week.  Hopefully the kids will continue to wear their Red Ribbons and show their pledge to stay DRUG FREE!

We had 367 students sign the pledge cards to be DRUG FREE! The following students and staff were the winners of the free Frozen Yogurts from Cool Cravings:

Preschool - Kiana C.

Kindergarten - Sunny K.

1st grade - Elizabeth P.

2nd grade - Braulio D.

3rd grade - Tabitha B.

4th grade - Elizabeth N.

5th grade - Morgan M.

Teacher/Staff - Ms. Gray

Due to the rain we had to make a few changes to our schedule.  Mileage Club was moved to Friday and we were still able to have some wonderful parents volunteer to help out on short notice.

I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers we had this week!  The following people/groups helped out, without them this week would not have been possible:

·         All of our wonderful Room Moms for helping to assemble the Red Ribbons for our kids!

·         Cub Scout Pack 648 for helping tie Red Ribbons around campus on Sunday, in the misty rain, to start the week off!

·         Girl Scout Troops 8223 and 8231 who made the “AB DRUG FREE” poster out of all the pledge cards signed by our students and teachers!  Unfortunately the rain melted their sign and it had to be taken down early.

·         Amy Lau, KC Hellencamp, Keli Boutros, Michele Kelly, LeAnn Erimli and Officer Christina Aguilar who helped out at the pledge table on Monday!

·         Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the last minute, due to rain canceling Wednesday’s Mileage club, to help hand out Red Ribbon Tokens on Friday at Mileage Club!

And a very special thank you to Cool Cravings Frozen Yogurt for donating the free frozen yogurts to Adobe Bluffs!

Thank you to all who helped out this year, without you we couldn’t have done it!

Karin Wong, 2010 PTA Red Ribbon Week Chair
