Principal's Message

How to Build Confidence in Children

Most parents rightfully believe their kids are exceptional, and see their positive qualities and strengths.  However, children sometimes lack confidence in their own abilities, whether it is in school or out in the community.  With a little effort, parents can help their children to build confidence.

A good first step is to help them recognize when they do a good job.  Tell them you are proud of them when they have accomplished something. Tell other’s about their accomplishments and positive qualities.  This will help them build pride in themselves.  When they make a mistake, praise them for the effort and talk about what could be done differently next time.  Walk them through the steps of doing the job the right way.

Many experts believe the best way to build confidence in a child is to give them responsibility.  Giving children jobs to do around the house helps them feel valuable. It also teaches them adult skills.  Choose tasks the child is capable of doing. Praise the child when he or she carries through and finishes the task without being reminded. Be specific in your praise to help reinforce success to your child.

Set rules and consequences.  A youngster who is required to follow rules, and has appropriate consequences, will realize it is done because their parents care.  Confidence begins with self-esteem and parents can play a major role in developing their children’s self image.  As a child grows older, praise can build his or her confidence.   What will you do today to build your child’s confidence?

With Aztec Pride,

Mark Atkins

Sun Safety

The Adobe Bluffs Foundation is working to create shade solutions in our landscape.  As parents in Southern California, we have a vested interest in increasing our awareness of the sun’s effect on our children.

This is the second of our series of tips outlined by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), to protect against the potentially damaging effects of the sun.

Tip #2:  APPLY SUNSCREEN

Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 to all exposed skin. The term broad-spectrum means that the sunscreen provides protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply approximately every two hours — even on cloudy days — and after swimming or sweating.

* Applying sunscreen to children before school is always a good idea.

This tip and others are located at the AAD's website.
