How to Build Confidence in Children
Most parents rightfully believe their kids are exceptional, and see their positive qualities and strengths. However, children sometimes lack confidence in their own abilities, whether it is in school or out in the community. With a little effort, parents can help their children to build confidence.
A good first step is to help them recognize when they do a good job. Tell them you are proud of them when they have accomplished something. Tell other’s about their accomplishments and positive qualities. This will help them build pride in themselves. When they make a mistake, praise them for the effort and talk about what could be done differently next time. Walk them through the steps of doing the job the right way.
Many experts believe the best way to build confidence in a child is to give them responsibility. Giving children jobs to do around the house helps them feel valuable. It also teaches them adult skills. Choose tasks the child is capable of doing. Praise the child when he or she carries through and finishes the task without being reminded. Be specific in your praise to help reinforce success to your child.
Set rules and consequences. A youngster who is required to follow rules, and has appropriate consequences, will realize it is done because their parents care. Confidence begins with self-esteem and parents can play a major role in developing their children’s self image. As a child grows older, praise can build his or her confidence. What will you do today to build your child’s confidence?
