Principal's Message

Adobe Bluffs’ teachers have been looking at ways to create the best learning environment for students with our increased class sizes.  We have identified attendance and student personal responsibility as two areas we would like to focus on.  The first trimester is ending this week and we have had a high rate of tardy students.  Punctuality is important so students do not miss out on valuable morning instruction.  It also reduces the disruption of kids straggling in after the bell.  Please do your best to get your child to school on time each day.

We ask that you schedule appointments after school whenever possible and plan family vacations during school breaks.  When missing school cannot be avoided, please sign up for independent study if your child will be out for 5 days or more.  With a shortened school year, and larger classes, we need to maximize each day.  Teachers have less time to spend with individual students, so personal accountability is very important.  Encourage your child to ask questions when they need help, and to give their best effort each day.  Check on them to ensure that they are completing their homework each night.  We believe that improving punctuality and encouraging personal responsibility in students will lead to better academic results.

As we approach the cold and flu season, I also want to remind everyone to keep sick children home until they are well.  See the district guidelines below:

Recognizing Flu Symptoms - Because all influenza or “flu” viruses can easily spread from person to person, Poway Unified is asking for your help in reducing the spread of flu in our schools.

Here’s What Parents Can Do To Help

  • Recognize the symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.

  • Do not send children to school if they are sick. Children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home. This includes before and after-school programs.

  • Make plans now for children who need to stay home. Plan for how children will be cared for at home in case they become ill.

  • Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without using fever-reducing drugs. By keeping children home when they have a fever, we can reduce the number of new people who may become infected.

  • For more information, visit the PUSD website.

Student Council

Good news Aztecs! We will be getting a new sound system thanks in part to our Student Council.  At our Student Council meeting, we voted on if we should donate $600 towards the $1000 new sound system. The $600 came from sales at the Student Store.  All of the Student Council voted “yes”!

GATE Testing Information

  • GATE Testing Request Window: October 6 - November 30, 2010

  • GATE Testing Dates: January 10-13, 2011

There will be only one GATE test offered this year.  Parents will need to go to the District website to request testing and fill out a GATE Questionnaire. The district will then notify the school and your child's teacher.

Please talk to your child’s teacher at conference time, if you would like feedback on his or her in-class characteristics and performance.

Thank you Rubio's and AB Community - Saturday, December 4, 2010

The Adobe Bluffs Educational Foundation would like to extend a special thank you to the parents and staff of Rubio's Torrey Highlands for their continued support.  Our numbers are in for the October 30th event.  We have beat all previous months, and made a profit of $311.61!  Our current total from the Rubio's fundraisers is $850.15!  That goes to show that buying a taco or two can go a long way toward helping to raise funds for our school!

Special thanks to Manager Francisco Carbajal and his staff for all of their support.

Please join us for our next Rubio's Fundraiser. This Holiday Season, we will be consolidating our November and December Rubio's Fundraisers into one date:  Saturday December 4th, 2010.

As always, you can download the flier for this month at the ABEF website or find it in your child's red folder on the week of the event.

Thanks, and eat up!

October Box Tops Results

The October Box top contest was a HUGE success bringing in over 9000 boxtops and $900 to Adobe Bluffs!  The winners of the contest were Mr. Knorr's 4th grade class who brought in 1,027 and Mrs. Belong's 1st grade class who brought in 1,009.  Great job everyone!

But, don't stop saving because the next contest will be in January and the student who brings in the most boxtops will win a pack of silly bands, plus we'll also do class otter pop parties too.  So...make sure when you turn in your student's box tops, you have your name on their bag, so we can determine who the winner is.

soon!

Thank You for Supporting the Scholastic Fall Book Fair

The PTA sponsored Fall Book Fair was a huge success!  We raised over $4,200.00 for new books for our library.  I want to personally thank all of our families and staff for coming out all week to buy books and support this worthy cause. In addition, this couldn’t have happened without the support of so many volunteer parents and staff…you know who you are!  Volunteers helped run the actual book fair, provided breakfast goodies on Tuesday morning for our “Books for Breakfast” event, helped with the Thursday evening family night with Clifford and Andy Aztec, as well, as the Library Open House...you name it there were volunteers ready and willing to help. Many of you volunteered above and beyond, so thank you!

We are excited to announce that there will be another great book fair coming to our school in the spring!!! Watch the newsletter for specific dates.

New 2010-11 Adobe Bluffs Spirit Wear is a Hit!

As you may have noticed this year's Spirit Wear has arrived and we are getting lots of positive feedback.  Many students and parents who missed ordering are now asking how they can get the new style tees and sweatshirts.  We are considering putting in a second order if there is enough interest.  So if you or your child missed out on the first order please contact Kathy Duston as soon as possible to let her know you are interested in purchasing more AB Spirit Wear.
