Principal's Message - Creating Balance

The New Year is under way and it seems as if everyone is scurrying at a frantic pace.  We know that adults work hard, but in today’s society, so do kids.  Children today have so many things going on, that it is sometimes hard to create balance.  After school activities like basketball, soccer, scouts, clubs, and homework create full days.  Many parents like the idea of keeping their kids involved in a variety of positive, structured activities.  The benefits can be great for our youth, yet with so many options it is easy for children to become overloaded.  With this in mind, families have to be careful not to over schedule.  When this happens attention to academics can be diminished.

You have probably heard it said that colleges are looking for well-rounded individuals.  Some describe being well-rounded as having a variety of experiences.  Others see it as having a passion in one or two areas (collegeadmissionspartners.com).  Some kids get so involved in sports, that they miss out on other kinds of experiences that they may have enjoyed.  Other students pursue the arts like dance, drama, music and miss out on team sports.  There are also students who leave school, and go straight to tutoring or after school programs to focus on academics or learning a language.  As we prepare our students for life after high school we want them to be academically prepared and active outside the classroom.

Each student needs a balance in activities that are centered on his or her personal needs and goals.  There should be activities that promote academics, physical fitness and their specific areas of interest.  If they are not sure what they want to do, trying new activity is a great way help them figure it out.  Rotating activities can be a good way to try a variety of things.  Fall basketball, winter soccer, spring dance, etc.  Participating in endeavors that help them learn about teamwork, develop leadership qualities and provide service to others are all excellent for helping students develop.  High priority must always be given to academic excellence and meeting the requirements of the classroom.  We want kids to find a balance that allows them to enjoy extra curricular activities while still giving academics proper attention.  Schools and families working together can help students achieve a balance between their school and community activities.

With Aztec Pride,

Mark Atkins

The Adobe Bluffs Winter Olympics – Thursday, February 25,  2010

The Adobe Bluff’s PTA is excited to announce that the AB Winter Olympics 2010 will be held on Thursday, 2/25 from 8:30am to 10:45am.  The PTA has organized and sponsored this day of field games for over 14 years. The AB Winter Olympics will focus on geography, teamwork, exercise and, of course, fun.

The field and multi-purpose room will be broken down into five sections.  Four of the sections will be located on the field and will each represent a different country where a “real” Olympics was held.  The last section, in the MPR, will be our Olympic Village, which will feature the history of the Olympics, background on some of the 2010 US Olympic team and a trivia game.

Please remind your student to wear comfortable clothes, sneakers and sunblock for this day of exercise and fun.

We are in need of over 60 volunteers, and donations of water jugs, oranges, and vanilla wafers, so if you are available to help at this exciting event please contact Nicole Sanseverino, 538-2200.

Let the games begin!

Library News  - AB Students read and vote for California Young Reader Medal Winners

Parents, ask your children which book will win their vote.

“The California Young Reader Medal program encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state. Since its inception in 1974, millions of California children have nominated, read, and voted for the winners of the California Young Reader Medal….Students read the nominated books from July through March and vote for their favorite. Teachers and librarians introduce the nominees to students, often in exciting and innovative ways. They provide ballots for the students, compile vote totals, and submit results to the CYRM committee.”

Sun Safety

This is the fifth tip of our series of tips outlined by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), to protect against the potentially damaging effects of the sun.

Tip #5:  Avoid tanning beds.

Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look like you've been in the sun, consider using a sunless self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.

This tip and others are taken from the AAD website.

The Adobe Bluffs Foundation would like to ask for your participation in educating our children in Sun Safety Awareness!

Next year, we would like to extend our Sun Safety Education program to the classroom.  To do this, we would like partner with a certified dermatologist who is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology.  If you are such a dermatologist, or know of one who would be willing to work with the Adobe Bluffs Foundation to enhance the instruction of sun awareness in our school, please contact Michelle Furtado at michelledfurtado@yahoo.com.
