| | Principal's Message - Creating Balance The New Year is under way and it seems as if everyone is scurrying at a frantic pace. We know that adults work hard, but in today’s society, so do kids. Children today have so many things going on, that it is sometimes hard to create balance. After school activities like basketball, soccer, scouts, clubs, and homework create full days. Many parents like the idea of keeping their kids involved in a variety of positive, structured activities. The benefits can be great for our youth, yet with so many options it is easy for children to become overloaded. With this in mind, families have to be careful not to over schedule. When this happens attention to academics can be diminished.
You have probably heard it said that colleges are looking for well-rounded individuals. Some describe being well-rounded as having a variety of experiences. Others see it as having a passion in one or two areas (collegeadmissionspartners.com). Some kids get so involved in sports, that they miss out on other kinds of experiences that they may have enjoyed. Other students pursue the arts like dance, drama, music and miss out on team sports. There are also students who leave school, and go straight to tutoring or after school programs to focus on academics or learning a language. As we prepare our students for life after high school we want them to be academically prepared and active outside the classroom.
Each student needs a balance in activities that are centered on his or her personal needs and goals. There should be activities that promote academics, physical fitness and their specific areas of interest. If they are not sure what they want to do, trying new activity is a great way help them figure it out. Rotating activities can be a good way to try a variety of things. Fall basketball, winter soccer, spring dance, etc. Participating in endeavors that help them learn about teamwork, develop leadership qualities and provide service to others are all excellent for helping students develop. High priority must always be given to academic excellence and meeting the requirements of the classroom. We want kids to find a balance that allows them to enjoy extra curricular activities while still giving academics proper attention. Schools and families working together can help students achieve a balance between their school and community activities. With Aztec Pride, Mark Atkins back to top |
