Principal's Message

Hello Adobe Bluffs Aztecs,

Our classrooms are preparing for this year’s California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program.  The STAR program requires all school districts throughout the state to annually use the same standardized tests to assess the achievement of students in the areas of reading, mathematics, and language arts.  There are three components of the STAR program:

1.      The California Content Standards Test (CST): These tests are administered to all students in grades 2 to 11.  They are designed to measure achievement of the California State Academic Standards.  All students are evaluated in Language arts and mathematics. All fourth grade students take a Writing Assessment.  All fifth grade students also take a Science test specifically aligned with their current course of study. These tests will be administered from April 19th – April 29th.

2.      The California Modified Assessment (CMA) is a grade-level assessment for students in grades 3 -11 who have an individualized education program (IEP).  The purposes of the CMA tests are to allow students with disabilities greater access to an assessment that helps measure how well they are achieving California's content standards.

3.      The CAPA is given to students with significant cognitive disabilities whose disabilities prevent them from taking either the California Standards Tests with accommodations or modifications or the California Modified Assessment with accommodations. See the California Department of Education's STAR CAPA blueprints or CAPA Web page for more information.

The best way to prepare your child for testing is to make sure they get plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast and arrive to school on time each day.  Students who arrive late will not be permitted to enter the classroom once testing has started.  Students who are late or absent will be given make-up session in supervised small group settings.  However, most students prefer to take the test along with their classmates.  The STAR yields individual score reports for each student that will be mailed home in August.

At Adobe Bluffs, we feel our students are well prepared and will shine on these assessments.  Thank you for preparing them to do their best.

With Aztec Pride,

Mark Atkins

Adobe Bluffs did a fantastic job raising money for people suffering from blood related cancers in the Pasta for Pennies Program. Our school raised $3,025.80! That is nearly $400 more than last year! The classroom that raised the most money was Room 15, Mrs. Marks' classroom. They raised $447.48 and will be receiving a pasta party compliments of the Olive Garden Restaurant. Way to go Aztecs!

Mrs. Lowrie's class, Room 3, won the spirit trophy this month for their awesome participation in Twin Day.

Are you known as the “Helmet Police”? This is a good thing.

Take your skateboards, rollerblades or non-motorized scooters out for fun with your friends, but remember to be safe. Here are some laws that skateboarders, rollerbladers and non-motorized scooter riders must follow.*

You have all the rights of a pedestrian but you must obey many of the same laws:

Obey the signs and speed limits - Obey all signs and signals, including speed limit and stop signs, yield right-of-way signs and traffic signals

Entering the street- Never enter the street suddenly or freestyle down your driveway. You may end up in the path of a vehicle

Face oncoming traffic - If there are no sidewalks, use the extreme left-hand edge of the road, facing oncoming traffic

Intersections - At an intersection, look both ways before you cross. Drivers are required to stop for pedestrians, but motorists may not see you in time

Bridges, highway overcrossings - Don't ride, board or blade on a bridge or highway overcrossing unless there is a sidewalk and a sign giving you permission. Many cities and counties forbid you to use them. Remember, public streets and highways are designed primarily for motor vehicles.

Helmets - California state law requires anyone under 18 who uses a skateboard, non-motorized scooter, rollerblades or roller skates is required to wear a helmet. It could save your life.  In addition to your helmet, wear gloves, knee pads and other protective gear.

Motorized Skateboards - Motorized Skateboards are legal on private property only. They are illegal on highways, sidewalks, bikeways and hiking or recreational trails.

* Counties and cities may have additional local ordinances.
