President's Message

Dear Families,

For the past few years, like a broken record or a horrible version of the movie Groundhog Day, it seems like we always find ourselves in the same spot come late April.  After clawing our way through yet another year of tough state budget cuts we are faced with the realization that more are likely on the way and every spring we wonder how it is possible for our schools to bear more cuts.   Yet again, after enduring revenue reductions of more than $30 million over the past three years it is now looking to be quite possible that Poway Unified School District could be faced with an additional reduction of $35 million for the next school year! (Source: PUSD Superintendent Collins letter to Parents and Staff)

We are very fortunate that our children enrolled in one the best school districts in the state if not the nation.  Thanks to the leadership and foresight of our current and past superintendents, a highly competent Board of Education and the sacrifices of our amazing teachers, Poway Unified School District is in a much better position than most school districts throughout the state.  Yet, these tough budgetary decisions have forced our students and teachers to scrape by with far fewer resources, larger class sizes, salary rollbacks and a one-week reduction in the school year.   Somehow, even with all the budgetary hardships, our children have continued to thrive.  However, it remains to be seen how this year’s increased class sizes and decreased school year will be reflected in STAR test results.

What is left to cut?  The truth is a further $35 million cut is unfathomable and it will hurt our kids (source: CA Shorter School Year... ) As one example, our children’s school year would very likely be further reduced.  The current 175 instructional days (reduced from 180) is already shockingly low compared to some of the top academic nations in the world:

          Canada:       190-200 (varies by Province)

          UK:              195

          Australia:      198

          Germany:      220

          Japan:          243

As parents, it is imperative that we are very clear with our elected representatives in Sacramento.  They need to know that our kids’ futures must not bear the brunt of further cuts to education.  I urge all of you to take a few minutes to send letters to Governor Brown, Senator Wyland and Assembly Member Fletcher.  Go to this PUSD link for easy-to-use draft letters or feel free to send a letter in your own words.

Thank you for all you do for our kids,

Krissa Jensen, PTA President 2010-2011

PS: One final link to an ABC News story on how US students compare internationally.  Surely more cuts are not the answer.

This is a wonderful, no questions asked, opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet of no-longer needed medications.  Emptying your home of these drugs is of particular importance in light of recent information regarding illegal home-obtained medication activity along the Highway 56 corridor involving kids of middle school age on up for pill parities and the like.

AB Science Day – Friday, May 13, 2011

Science Day is a school-wide event.  In the morning, the students will be attending the very entertaining, "H20 Where Did You Go?" presentation and your child's teacher may be planning extra special science activities.  Check with them to see if they need any help.  In the afternoon, Adobe Bluffs will have community members come and give 20 minute talks to all of the 2nd through 5th graders.  In addition, they will attend a presentation by Dr. Zoolittle.  The first graders, Pre-K, and kindergarteners will go to one of two special presentations-- either Radical Reptiles or "The Lizard Wizard."  Volunteers are needed to help greet our community presenters and set up lunch for them and the staff (approximate time is from 11am-12:45pm).  If you are interested and available please contact Stephanie Gragg, (858)484-5257.
