President's Message

I hope this message finds all of our families and staff making a relatively smooth transition into the new school year.  I would like to thank all of you who have turned in your PTA Order Forms for Hassle Free, Membership and Spirit Wear.  It is not too late to turn in your forms if you are still hanging onto them or misplaced them in the craziness of the first few days of school.  You will find all the forms on the ABES PTA website. A few hard copies are also available in the Office.

This week I would like to focus on the importance of PTA Membership.  Many of you have heard over and over again why PTA Membership is important and there are indeed many great reasons to join.  However, I would like to focus on 401 extraordinary reasons at Adobe Bluffs, our children!  Yes, our children are the number one reason PTA Membership is so important! And, quite frankly, our children are being let down.

The impact of $17 billion in cuts, over the past two years, to California’s public school system, is undeniable.  Up until now, it has been easy to turn a blind eye to the crisis. The loss of support staff, counselors, social workers and faculty pay cuts have not been as visible to the majority of families.  However, if you have ventured on campus over the past two weeks you are now seeing the impact.  You can’t miss it.  Our children are crammed into their classrooms.  Kindergarten through third grade classes are maxed out at 28 children per class and fourth and fifth grade classes are maxed out at 35 children per class. There’s hardly room to walk in the 4th and 5th grade classes!  Through all this we remain very fortunate to be in the Poway Unified School District.  For the time being, our children’s STAR Test results continue to improve thanks in no small part to the wonderful and caring teachers at Adobe Bluffs who are willing to continue to work hard for every child while taking pay cuts two years in a row.  How many people do you know happily walk into work every day with a smile on their face and work harder than ever while getting paid less?  Our Adobe Bluffs teachers and staff are incredible people and deserve our gratitude big time!

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to the fiscal mess in California.  School bake sales are not going to cover a $17 billion shortfall and word is the cuts are far from over. If you find these conditions as upsetting as I do, I urge you, at a minimum, to take one simple step and join PTA.  By joining PTA you add your voice to a nonpartisan organization that has been advocating for children for over 100 years and every added voice will strengthen the California PTA’s voice when it advocates for our children in Sacramento.  Every Child, One Voice.

Please remember that anyone may join Adobe Bluffs PTA and keep in mind that memberships are individual, not per family.  I, therefore, urge all Adobe Bluffs parents to join, and I urge you to ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors and friends to join.  We all have a stake in our children’s academic success.  They are the future. Click here for PTA membership form.

That being said, I look forward to seeing all our families this evening as we celebrate our return to school NFL style at our NFL Back to School Picnic, 5:30 – 7:30pm at Adobe Bluffs “Stadium”.  Wear your favorite Chargers gear (or other NFL team gear), pack a picnic dinner, bring a healthy tailgate dessert to share and be ready to join in some fun NFL style games and activities!  Go Aztecs!

Sincerely,

Krissa Jensen, PTA President, 2010-11

Legislation and Advocacy - Let the Governor know how to vote on SB 847

Dear Adobe Bluffs Parents,

We need your help to get money to our schools!! You will make a difference but you have to act today!!

The President recently signed into law the Education Jobs Fund. This means California will receive $1.2 billion, estimated to save 16,500 education jobs in our state!!… BUT only if the Governor signs in Senate Bill 847.

In the absence of a state budget, SB 847 gives legislative authority to the CA Dept of Education to disburse these funds. SB 847 specifies that the funds are to be disbursed to school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools on the basis of revenue limits within 14 days of the passage of this act or notification to the state of federal funding award, whichever is later. The Governor must sign SB 847 for the money to get to our schools!! The bill passed the assembly and the senate so it's on the governor's desk now!

Please take these easy steps to email your governor!!

  1. Go to the E-mail the Governor page
  2. Fill in the preliminary contact information and select the subject “Education issues/concerns”

  3. Click submit
  4. On the next screen, where it says “Your position:”, choose “pro

  5. In the space under "Write your email:" Here is an example of what you can type in "Please sign in Senate Bill 847 today to bring Congress approved funds to our schools!! Thank you."

You can add other concerns you may have but this is the action we need from him today.  Please contact me, Lisa Naritomi with any questions. Thank you for your support and taking action to protect our childrens' education!!!

Sincerely,

Lisa Naritomi

Congratulations Adobe Bluffs, and Special Thanks to Rubio's!

The community of Adobe Bluffs was able to come together within just three days of the start of school to spend over one thousand dollars at Rubio's.  This resulted in $234.00 of fundraising money raised.  If we continue with at least this amount for the next ten Rubio's fundraisers, we will raise over $2000.00!  This amount of money would pay for two years of Computer Resource Assistant help for M.A.P.S. testing.

The next Rubio's Day is Saturday, September 25.  Help us beat our target! Bring in an AB Rubio's flyer. Buy food. Have 25% of your meal money donated to AB.  While you're at it, bring a friend!  Tell your co-workers!  Bring flyers to your child's sports team!

Eat up at Rubio's Saturday, September 25, anytime between 11am & 9pm, closing.
