Principal's Message

Fall is here, and hopefully you are enjoying the cooler temperatures. Our students have just finished their fall assessment (MAP test) and are setting new academic goals. The Adobe Bluffs staff is always looking for ways to help all students reach their potential.  We have done our research and believe we have found a resource that will be very helpful to our students.  With the generous support of our Foundation, we were able to purchase a web based program called “Study Island”.  It is aligned to the California state standards, and allows each student to work on the areas identified by MAP, CST and teacher assessments as needing attention.  It can also be used for enrichment for students who need an extra challenge.  I believe parents will enjoy the fact that students will have the opportunity to use “Study Island” after school, on weekends, and even during the summer via the internet!  We will be sending more information home to parents shortly. If you are very curious, you can check the Study Island website.

Safety

The safety of our students is a priority. We have large group of students who walk to and from school each day, and we need to keep them safe.  There have been reports of cars speeding down the neighborhood streets; therefore, please drive slowly and carefully when dropping students off and picking up after school.  I have forwarded those reports to SDPD, and they will be providing additional support by patrolling around ABES to help us.

Please remind your children of the following:

·         It is best to be with friends when walking, bicycle riding, or playing outside.

·         Be alert to strangers. The best thing to do is to run away if a stranger approaches.

·         Let parents and/or the school know what has happened.

For additional safety tips, visit the PUSD website at www.powayusd.com and click on the school safety link on top of the home page.

With Aztec Pride,

Mark Atkins

AB Health Office

Parents:

Please be diligent this year with checking your students head every week for lice. There is plenty of information on our Website regarding Pediculois. Just go to the AB website, click on About Us, and Health.  Information and facts will be right there for you to research.

A common area of concern for transmitting this lice is sleep-overs. Please explain to your child the importance of not sharing pillows, blankets, and hair brushes when having slumber parties.

For parents:  Ask your child which book they voted for at library time during Red Ribbon Week.  Two of their choices will be Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Where the Wild Things Are.  The third book will be revealed during Red Ribbon Week.

Fall Scholastic Book Fair - November 9-13

It’s time to celebrate books and reading with our PTA sponsored Fall Scholastic Book Fair. This year’s theme is Destination Book Fair: Read Around The World. The Book Fair is scheduled for November 9th-13th. It will be closed on Wednesday November 11th for the Veteran’s Day Holiday.   Children will visit the fair with their class. They may bring money to purchase books or fill out a wish list to bring home. Teachers will also have wish lists at the fair so that parents who are interested in giving a teacher a book will be able to look at a list and avoid duplication. Another option is a book gift certificate that allows the teacher to pick out their own book for the class.

We hope you will come and take this opportunity to support literacy!

Remember Adobe Bluffs earns a percentage back in cash and also in new books for our library from the total sales of the book fair. So, please come and support your children and our school!

For more information or to volunteer contact Shari Le Favour.

Ball Room Needs Your Help

The AB PTA is looking for a few volunteers to rotate during lunch recess  on Tues. and Thurs. (except when raining.)  If you are interested in giving about an hour of time (11:25-12:15) to make our wonderful Adobe Bluffs kids happy, we could use your help.  The job is EASY and the reward is seeing the kids’ smiles.  What ever time you could give would be awesome...first Tues., every other Thurs.., you decide.

Please consider helping.  I know I won't be able to be there EVERY Tues/Thurs and the kids really, really get excited to use the equipment.  Especially the non-sports kids, they love the board games!  Please contact Jaime Kaesbauer for more details.

Sun Safety

The Adobe Bluffs Foundation is working to create shade solutions in our landscape.  As parents in Southern California, we have a vested interest in increasing our awareness of the sun’s effect on our children.

This column will present the tips outlined by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), to protect against the potentially damaging effects of the sun.  It will provide practical tips to implement sun safety while enjoying the beautiful outdoors that San Diego has to offer.  For more information about these tips, visit the AAD’s website

Tip #1:  SEEK SHADE

Seek shade when appropriate. Remember that the sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If your shadow appears to be shorter than you are, seek shade.
