Room Parents

A Room Parent Representative(s) is a parent and/or guardian from a particular class who serves as a liaison or contact person for that classroom. Being a room parent is one of the most enjoyable and valuable volunteer opportunities at Adobe Bluffs. You will be an important link in the communication between the PTA, parents and the teacher in your child’s classroom.

Requirements

Room parents must fulfill the required PUSD criteria for volunteers. Click here to see the PUSD criteria.

Responsibilities

1.       Schedule a meeting with the teacher to discuss his/her plans for the school year.

2.       Distribute a letter to the parents introducing yourself as the “Room Parent” and give them an overview of the year’s activities.  Also get contact information from them we encourage everyone to get emails address to help save paper (sample letter).

3.       Assist with classroom activities and parties.

  • Consult with your child’s teacher regarding dates, times, etc. two weeks prior to the party/event.

  • All party themes and decorations are to be non-religious.

  • All food items must be store bought. No homemade goodies allowed.

  • Always leave time for clean-up.

4.       Maintain a good line of communication with your child’s classroom teacher.

5.       Inform parents of activities either by emails, telephone, or notes/flyers.

6.       Help communicate via emails, PTA events with your class.

7.       Coordinate the activities in your classroom for Staff Appreciation Days (more details to follow).

9.       Sign the Volunteer Log in the office when on campus.

10.   A Volunteer Badge must be worn at all times while on campus.

Suggestions

  • Any request for money or contributions is strictly voluntary. Include this in all notes to be sent home by student (sample letter).

  • Share information gather from the Room Parent Teacher Survey (sample survey).  Many students/parents like to give gifts to their teacher but struggle with what to get them.  Your survey can help everyone!

  • DELEGATE!  Give everyone a chance to assist with class parties.

  • As a room parent you will be spending time in the classroom. Please respect the confidentiality of parent/teacher and student/teacher relationships should you inadvertently see or hear something about a student.

Party Options

The results of past Room Parent Surveys indicate that Room Parents prefer to plan and run classroom celebrations individually (with the guidance from the teacher) rather than having everything the same in each classroom.  Therefore, you may utilize one of the following party options:

  • Parents are asked for money before each party.  They then purchase all of the needed items (food, drinks, party supplies, etc.)
  •
Parents are assigned items to bring before each event.
  • Parents are asked for a one-time contribution at the beginning of the year (typically $15-$25) and then the parents are asked for nothing the rest of the year. All contributions are strictly voluntary.  You are not obligated to contribute food, supplies or money during the year.

Please keep in mind good nutrition even for parties, we prefer water as the drink (no punch or colored beverages, please).

Always try to keep the lines of communication open between the teacher and yourself and between the parents and you.  Do not hesitate to ask the teacher what he/she wants if you are not sure.  Keep parents informed in a timely manner about parties and events.

Thank you for all you do to assist the Adobe Bluffs Faculty and Staff. Your endless efforts in making Adobe Bluffs Elementary the “special” place that our children learn and grow academically and socially does not go unnoticed. I look forward in working with you this school year and should you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact the VP of Volunteers.
