Adobe Bluffs PTA President’s Message

Dear Adobe Bluffs Families:

I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing summer! I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome both to our returning families and to our new Adobe Bluffs families.  To our new families, I think you will quickly see when your children walk through the front gates of Adobe Bluffs that they enter a terrific learning environment bursting with dedicated and caring teachers and staff.  Adobe Bluffs Elementary truly is a small school with a big heart!

An army of enthusiastic volunteers are at the ready to assist in your child’s classroom and run the extra programs Adobe Bluffs children have come to expect.  Maybe you are one of those volunteers?  If so, I thank you in advance for the thousands of invaluable hours you will donate to Adobe Bluffs this year.  Whether you give your time in a classroom, helping the Educational Foundation raise funds, assisting with the Yearbook or helping out with one of the many PTA Programs, your time is valued and much appreciated. It matters little whether you are able to give one hour per month or twenty hours per week, the personal rewards are huge.  Your child(ren) will love to see you at school! You’ll get to know your child’s classmates better.  You’ll get to know your child’s teacher better. You’ll get to know other parents and continue to build the wonderful community Adobe Bluffs is known for.

This school year, your PTA will be offering all of the programs you and your child(ren) love like Arts Attack, Mileage Club, Science Day, Winter Jamboree and College Games just to name a few. I am so excited about some new programs we will be offering. In particular, a former Adobe Bluffs teacher and current AB parent, has graciously offered to develop a Music Appreciation Program aligned to the California Standards and we have a couple of excited and talented parents offering their time to support this new program.

As well, Adobe Bluffs PTA has modified its Mission and Goals statements to more prominently support and encourage Healthy Lifestyles.  We will be encouraging students to set achievable health conscious goals for themselves, including increased physical activity and healthier snack and lunch choices while promoting the reduction of trash.  Personally, I am a strong believer that the “fuel” we feed our children and ourselves has an enormous impact on our children’s overall health and wellness and that the combination of being active and eating a healthy diet enhances their ability to learn and live life to the fullest!

Please feel free to contact me at anytime with questions, concerns or ideas.

I’m looking forward to serving my second year as your PTA President!

Go Aztecs!

Sincerely,

Krissa Jensen,

ABES PTA President 2011-12

Classroom Party and Birthday Celebration Policy

Effective August, 2011

Adobe Bluffs Elementary School recognizes that birthdays are a special day for our students. We must also ensure that party celebrations do not disrupt the learning process. Additionally, Adobe Bluffs Elementary School adheres to the Poway Unified School District (PUSD’s) wellness policy that recognizes the importance of wellness, good nutrition and an active lifestyle in the overall health of our students. The school and our staff are responsible for positively influencing student beliefs and habits in these areas. Frequent birthday celebrations with cookies, cupcakes and other sweets are not in alignment with these learning goals.

Each school class is permitted to have a maximum of three classroom parties each school year.  For these three celebrations and special school sponsored events, the food served in the classroom may include cookies, cake and other foods that are not within the wellness policy guidelines. Effective August, 2011, student birthdays will be celebrated without food.  We are hopeful that families will consider donating a book or ball to the classroom in lieu of food treats.  This program will also make it much easier for children with summer birthdays who have often felt left out of an opportunity to have their birthday recognized in their class.

Please note that the Adobe Bluffs PTA will promote a new Birthday Book Club which allows a birthday child to donate a book and receive special recognition on one of their class library days to celebrate their birthday.

If you have any questions regarding the school’s classroom party/birthday celebration policy, please contact Mark Atkins, Adobe Bluffs Elementary School Principal at matkins@powayusd.com.

Classroom Supply - Online Donations 2011-12

PUSD Foundation/Poway Federation of Teachers

This year the PUSD Foundation and the Poway Federation of Teachers have a new opportunity for parents to donate directly to their child’s teacher(s) classroom(s)program, department, grade level or the school using an online donation website. The website was designed to provide parents with an easy and convenient way to help fund the instructional supply needs of our classrooms, programs, departments, grade levels or the school.

Parents can access the online donation website for our school and will receive a tax deduction and email confirmation when they donate.

Contributions in this account may only be used for instructional supplies (e.g. school supplies, software, workbooks, art and science materials…).  Parents may view a list of general instructional materials on the website that all our classrooms need. Individual teachers, grade levels and/or departments may have unique supply needs and may communicate those instructional supply needs using their regular classroom communication process.

The Classroom Supplies – Online Donation website is sponsored by the PUSD Foundation and the Poway Federation of Teachers
