3-2-1-BLAST OFF!!! Our Online Fair is launching THIS Monday, October 24th! We're blasting off and celebrating books and reading with our Fall Scholastic Book Fair! Make sure to visit our Fair BOTH online and also at school starting October 31st.
Students will visit the fair with their class during school. They can fill out "wish lists" to take home. Students may also bring money to purchase books, but make sure to include enough for sales tax! If writing a check, all checks must be made payable to "Adobe Bluffs PTA."
Parents are welcome at the fair anytime. Feel free to visit with your child before or after school, or come on your own after drop off or before pick up time. You must sign-in at the Office and wear a "Visitor" sticker if you come to the Fair during school hours.
Please note that students visiting the Fair before school must come with a parent and/or money to purchase specific books. It will be too busy to have lots of students filling out "wish lists" before school. Student "wish lists" can be completed during their class visit when it is less hectic.
Also, don't forget to visit our Library Open House on November 3rd. Please come by to say "hi" to our Librarian, Susan Linger, and "check out" the grand re-opening of our expanded library. Click here to visit our AB library's website
Thank you for supporting literacy at our school! When you purchase great books for your child to read or a book from a Teacher's Wish List, all proceeds go directly to our library for more books!

Ability Awareness in Action Celebration for preschool-5th grade students
Thursday, October 27, 2011, 8:30am-11:30am
Adobe Bluffs Elementary School is hosting its 2nd Annual "Ability Awareness in Action Celebration". During this celebration, Adobe Bluffs students will hear from community members who experience disability. Guest presenters will include persons with varying disabilities including autism, short stature, quadriplegia, physical impairments, and intellectual challenges. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about wheel chairs and assistive technology use. Students will rotate through stations and listen to these guest presenters share their experiences in a positive manner. These stations will focus on the fundamentals of Ability Awareness: Respectful Language, Attitudes and Assumptions, Assistive Technology, Accessibility, and Disability History.
This event is part of a week long awareness program that includes:
· Esther Hilleli, a k-2 special education teacher speakings to each classroom about treating people with fairness and respect
· school wide educational posters that focusing on Ability Awareness fundamentals
· Daily morning announcements
· an essay contest, poster contest and
· the creation of an Ability Tree.
During this celebration, Adobe Bluffs will also be launching its respectful language campaign. Bullying negatively affects the atmosphere of every school and disrupts the learning environment for all students. It takes all of our Adobe Bluff community to create an inviting school where every student feels included and safe. With the help of administrators, teachers, school staff, parents, and students, Adobe Bluffs hopes to prevent bullying at school. Therefore, once a month, the students and staff of Adobe Bluffs will wear specially made T-shirts to support the promotion of respectful language for everyday speech and promote acceptance and inclusion of all people.
Abobe Bluffs would like to thank our program sponsors: the Zorn family, Manqueros family, Rumman family, Hanger family, Sherwinter family, Siry Auto Group, Black Mountain Round Table Pizza, Carmel Mountain Islands Restaurant, Carmel Mountain Claim Jumpers, Carmel Mountain Pat & Oscars, Always an Adventure Charters, Julie's Silk Screening, and Dr. George Zorn, Jr. of Hillcrest Surgical.

Adobe Bluffs Library Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteers
For the past several years, 5th grade students have had the opportunity to volunteer in the Adobe Bluffs library by participating in the Adopt A Shelf program. These volunteers are responsible, self directed 5th grades who are willing to donate one recess a week to help in the library. Their responsibilities include shelf reading (putting an entire shelf in its proper order), gathering and reshelving books for their shelf, cleaning and maintaining their shelves to help them look appealing, and finding damaged books and putting them in the “Book Hospital”. In addition to their own shelves, these students may also help out in unassigned areas of the library that have not yet been adopted! Thank you to all the Fifth Graders who have volunteered to be an Adopt A Shelf Volunteer this year.

The Flu Season Is Soon Upon Us
For businesses and schools the Flu Season takes a tremendous toll. It is important to take whatever steps necessary to protect ourselves and our students from the Flu Virus.
We all know the symptoms characterized by fever, headache, fatigue, chills, cough, sore throat, and aching muscles; vomiting and diarrhea may occur but are not as common. The Flu Virus is spread from person-to-person by airborne droplets most likely during the first 1-3 days from when the symptoms first appear. However, sometimes people can be contagious even before their symptoms appear. There are several generally accepted ways to decrease the chances of exposure and catching the Flu.
Tips for Students
Ü Encourage parents and students to take flu symptoms seriously. If students are experiencing flu symptoms, they should be kept at home.
Ü Encourage students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. A little “reminder” and perhaps instruction on how to “catch your cold in your elbow” would be timely. Have students immediately and properly dispose of each soiled tissue.
Ü Instruct students not to share items that may be contaminated with saliva such as beverage containers.
Ü Encourage students to also wash their hands regularly with soap and water.
