Doodle 4 Google
Doodle 4 Google is a competition open to K-12 students of U.S. schools to create their own Google doodle inspired by a given theme. The 2011 theme was "What I’d like to do someday…" The 2012 theme will be announced in January. Last year more than 107,000 doodles from K-12 students across the country were submitted.
Previously, because of submissions rules, AB students participated in a school-wide Doodle 4 Google competition and the winning grade level entries were submitted to Google. The submission rules have changed. Two significant changes are that there is no limit to the number of submissions from each school and now parents can submit entries on their child’s behalf. Because of these changes AB is not running a Doodle 4 Google competition but we still encourage your child to submit an entry. Last year’s winning submission (see picture at right) was drawn by a 7 year old from San Francisco. He won a $15,000 college scholarship and $25,000 technology grant for his school.
Learn more about the competition at the Doodle 4 Google website.

A Healthy Tip to Grow On...
Tis’ the season for giving! Whether your holiday list is completed or you are still deciding on an ideal gift for your child here’s an interesting article about children, play and toys - What the Research Says: Gender-Typed Toys from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. A professor in the article states, "If you want to develop children's physical, cognitive, academic, musical, and artistic skills, toys that are not strongly gender-typed are more likely to do this."

AB Benefits from Halloween Candy Buy Back
Dr. Noel Moser offered schools a way to raise money and at the same time save the students from excess sugar by giving participating schools cash for candy.
Dr. Moser paid a dollar for each pound of candy surrendered between November 1 and 2nd. In those two days, Moser Orthodontics received over 2,500 pounds of candy from participating schools which was donated to the “troops” and San Diego Rescue Mission. Adobe Bluffs students and parents also participated in this program and AB received a check for $66.50 from Moser Orthodontics.

Adobe Bluffs “AZTECHS” compete at Legoland FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Cup

Adobe Bluffs sent its new FIRST Lego League (FLL) Team, the “AZTECHS” to compete at Legoland this past Sunday, December 4th. The six member team consisting of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students worked very hard this fall developing a research project and designing, building and programming their Lego robot “Frank” to run numerous missions in competition. After a long and grueling 10-hour competition our inaugural AZTECHS team placed 14th out of 52 southern California teams! Congratulations AZTECHS!
Some Background on FLL: FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). In 1998, FIRST Founder Dean Kamen and the LEGO Group’s Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen joined forces to create FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a powerful program that engages children in playful and meaningful learning while helping them discover the fun in science and technology through the FIRST experience. Dean and Kjeld have a shared belief that FLL inspires teams to research, build, and experiment, and by doing so, they live the entire process of creating ideas, solving problems, and overcoming obstacles, while gaining confidence in their abilities to positively use technology. The FLL Core Values are the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. Participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.
Adobe Bluffs PTA is proud to be able to bring this program to our school but we could not have done it without the dedication and support of our coaches, Russell Deich, Jack Silberman and Alex Szeto, our Principal Mark Atkins, the financial support of our sponsors, BAE Systems and QuoteZoom and last but not least the support of our team parents.
