Adobe Bluffs President's Message

Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday with your families.

After the festivities, it’s now time to turn our attention back to the business of education and making sure our kids have the tools they need to excel at school.   In 2012, our Adobe Bluffs PTA volunteers will continue to deliver quality programs that enhance the Adobe Bluffs student experience.

Beyond our ongoing programs, we are looking forward to bringing our families another exciting Winter Jamboree on Saturday January 21st from 11am to 3pm on the ABES blacktop.   If you are a new Adobe Bluffs family, I guarantee you will not want to miss this fun family day with friends and teachers.  If you are a veteran Adobe Bluffs family you know how much fun this annual event is and I know you are looking forward to another terrific Jamboree!   Our Jamboree organizers have an exciting day planned and can’t wait to see you all on Jan. 21.  A ticket presales order from will be coming home today, please fill it out and return by January 13th.  If you are interested in volunteering some time, either in the next couple of weeks leading up to the event or on the day of, please contact KC Hellencamp, Helly15@aol.com or Bill Forster, bill.forster@earthlink.net.  Or go to the online Volunteer Signup Sheet. This will be Bill’s last year organizing the volunteers for this event so, if anyone is interested in taking over, now is the time to check in with Bill and learn the ropes.  It is a terrific position for someone who is computer literate and able to set up an online volunteer sign-up sheet.

Also, in January we will be signing up students for February’s Life Lessons/Character Counts program.  I encourage all parents to consider enrolling their students in this incredible character-building program.   This is a win-win-win program for you, your student(s) and for Adobe Bluffs.   Your student(s) will learn to be strong on the outside with exercise and karate techniques and strong on the inside by learning the power of making good choices.  You will be amazed when your child actually wants to make their bed, tidy their room, help with kitchen chores and makes a heartfelt habit of saying “please,” “thank you,” and “I love you”.    To top this off, all the proceeds go directly to Adobe Bluffs to help fund important educational programs.  Please see the article below for more details.  Space is limited so make sure you enroll early to guarantee a spot.   Registration forms will be coming home on January 17th.  I look forward to seeing your smiling faces at the Life Lessons Graduation on February 15th!

All the best to you and your families in 2012!

AB Winter Jamboree

Saturday, January 21, 2012

11am - 3pm, on the AB Playground

It's easy to volunteer for the AB Winter Jamboree using our online signup sheet.  Volunteer opportunities are still available.

We also need volunteers for some of the larger roles at the Jamboree, including coordinators for the concessions, BBQ, prize booth, cake walk, photo booth, and cotton candy as well as volunteers to make cakes and cookies for the Cake Walk and Cookie Decorating.

It would be great to find a handyman for any last minute booth fix ups on the morning of the event, and possibly to help build a new booth or two (ideas are welcome).

Thanks for your time and support.

Bill Forster, bill.forster@earthlink.net and

KC Hellenkamp, Helly15@aol.com

Doodle 4 Google Annual Competition

Doodle 4 Google is a competition open to K-12 students of U.S. schools to create their own Google doodle inspired by a given theme.  The 2011 theme was "What I’d like to do someday…" The 2012 theme will be announced sometime in January.  Last year more than 107,000 doodles from K-12 students across the country were submitted.

Previously, because of submissions rules, AB students participated in a school-wide Doodle 4 Google competition and the winning grade level entries were submitted to Google. The submission rules have changed. Two significant changes are that there is no limit to the number of submissions from each school and now parents can submit entries on their child’s behalf.  Because of these changes AB is not running a Doodle 4 Google competition but we still encourage your child to submit an entry.  Last year’s winner was a 7 year old from San Francisco.  He won a $15,000 college scholarship and $25,000 technology grant for his school.

Learn more about the competition at the Doodle 4 Google website.

Cub Scout Corner

Cub Scout Pack 648 has been quite busy through the Holiday Season and nothing is going to change in 2012.  We went on a walking tour of Old Town before Thanksgiving and made treats and sang carols for the residents at Villa Rancho Bernardo in December.  Both the boys and the seniors enjoyed their time together. This month we are all looking forward to our annual Pine Wood Derby on January 29 at Hilltop Park from 12-3. Stop by and watch the racing.  All of our Webelos, highest ranking cub scouts, are having a blast exploring the various boy scout troops in our area and are deciding on which ones they will be joining in March.  There is still plenty of time to visit Pack 648 and get in on the fun - visit us at www.pqpack648.com
